Authorities Found Remains of Lady Architect at Davao Banana Plantation

In the Calinan District of Davao City, a distressing incident unfolded on Wednesday morning (May 17, 2023) as the lifeless body of Vlanche Marie Bragas, a 28-year-old female architect, was discovered in a ditch within a banana plantation.

Maj. Catherine dela Rey, the spokesperson for the Davao City Police Office, confirmed the tragic incident in the area.

The victim’s body was found in a face-down position beneath withered banana fronds, situated in an open ditch at the Subasta Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Agricultural Cooperative (SARBAC) banana plantation in Barangay Dacudao’s Purok 6. The distressing discovery took place around 8 am.

Bragas had been reported missing at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday prior to the incident. She was last seen riding a yellow pedicab, sometimes known as an “ombak,” in the Calinan neighborhood at Crossing Fausta. This information adds another degree of concern to the matter.

Maj. Catherine dela Rey said in a text message that when Bragas’s body was discovered, her pants and underwear were found down, implying a sexual assault.

The finding simply adds to the gravity of the situation, raising fear and a sense of urgency among officials.

Brig. General Alden Delvo, the chief of the Davao Police Regional Office, has immediately ordered a comprehensive investigation into the incident. General Delvo expressed grave worry over the region’s alarmingly high rate of rape cases.

The Southern Mindanao area has been plagued by a significant number of rape incidents, with Davao City topping the list, accounting for 35 out of the 128 reported cases in the first four months of this year.

Although this figure represents a decrease compared to the same period last year, during which the Davao Region witnessed 172 recorded instances of rape, it is still an alarming situation that requires immediate attention and concerted efforts to address this deeply troubling issue.
