Dried Opium Poppy Buds Discovered at the NAIA – BOC

BOC Personnel Seized Dried Opium Poppy Buds at the NAIA

The personnel of the Bureau of Customs (BOC) seized five kilos dried opium poppy buds at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

Personnel from the BOC and NAIA PDEA-Inter Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group confiscated up to five kilograms of ‘dry opium’ from the Central Mail Exchange Center (CMEC) in Pasay City. On April 17, 2023, a cargo bearing the pseudonym Sammee Singh was dispatched from Navarro de Haro, Spain.

The illicit product was labeled as ‘prepared foods of cereals corn flakes,’ according to the complaint. According to the BOC-Port of NAIA, Customs employees prevented the aforementioned parcel from being discharged from the warehouse after the suspicious shape inside was detected by the x-ray scanning machine.

Dried Opium NAIA

Based on the report, a 100% physical check by Customs and PDEA employees revealed that the box contained 5 kilos of dried opium. However, the Customs administration does not yet know the street worth or street value of the aforementioned dried opium poppy buds.

This is the first time they have intercepted opium from a foreign country at the NAIA facility, they claim. Amandeep Singh, 37, an Indian national and businessman from B4 L12, Amsterdam St., Chester Place Subd., Burol, Dasmarias, Cavite, was detained.

He has been living in the bush for 15 years and uses the dried plant to relieve back pain. Customs personnel delivered the collected dried opium to the PDEA-IADITG office, while the claimant was thoroughly investigated.
