Airline Staff Suspended After Accused Involved in Alleged “Tissue Scam” Against an OFW

An airline staff allegedly involved in the “tissue scam” against an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) was suspended from service.

According to a previous article, an airline’s check-in counter agent allegedly charged an OFW for her excess baggage. Instead of being settled at the office, the penalty payment was allegedly made through their personal bank account.

According to the article, Philippine Airlines (PAL) is investigating the event after an OFW named Maryclair Reyes’s tweet went viral. According to PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna, the employees implicated in the plan have been placed on “preventive suspension.”

“For now, the concerned check-in agent has been placed on preventive suspension, and we are working with Macro Asia (the agent’s employer and our service provider at NAIA Terminal 2) to enforce PAL’s strict policies against any form of fraud or irregularities, and to prevent any recurrence,” said Villaluna.

“Rest assured that we do not tolerate the necessary actions to protect our customers and safeguard the integrity of all our operations,” added the official.

This weekend, Reyes’ post became viral after another NAIA scam was exposed. Reyes is believed to be willing to pay her over baggage cost, but when she learned that she would have to pay P11,000, she told the employee that he could only give her P5,000.

She was handed a piece of tissue paper with her personal bank account number printed on it. According to the PAL representative, paying the over-luggage fee at the check-in counter is a clear breach of their standard operating procedure.

The authority further stated that a receipt should be provided after paying the price. The airline is now looking into the event, including the statement of their passenger who wrote about it on social media.
