Gloria Diaz shared her thoughts on the new Miss Universe rule
Veteran actress Gloria Diaz said that she is not in favor of married women and mothers joining the Miss Universe pageant.
Gloria is the Miss Universe 1969. She is the first-ever Filipina beauty queen who the said international beauty pageant. Throughout the years, she has become an inspiration to many pageant aspirants.
Over the years, new rules are set. The age limit for women joining the pageant was changed and it is now 28 years old.
Transgender women are also allowed to join and just recently, it was announced that married women, as well as those who already have a child or children, can join the most prestigious beauty pageant in the world.
In a recent interview, based on the article in PEP, Gloria Diaz opposed this role. “Di dapat, Universe na lang, huwag nang Miss. Kasi, hindi na Miss yon, di ba?” the veteran actress said.
She further said, “Dapat ‘Universe’! Hindi, I think they even include transvestites. Siyempre, going with the times, no? Pero my personal opinion — which is not to be taken in the negative way — dapat may sarili silang contest. May Mrs. Universe, may Lesbian Universe, may Tranny Universe.”
The actress also pointed out that there should be different categories and that it is okay for married women and mothers to join Mrs. Universe.
Gloria said that the new rules started to surface when it was suggested that the age limit will be 28 years old. The age limit was changed in 2016. Before this, it was from 18 years old to 26 years old.
“In fact noon, pag may 23 years old, sasabihin nila, ‘And the oldest candidate, 23 years old…’ Ganyan, no? Bukod-tanging ikaw ang pinakamatanda. Pero ngayon, nakaka-28 na yata, puwede pa rin, e. It’s hard. It’s a very new idea na sa akin… not very acceptable,” she shared.
Gloria Diaz stressed that each category has its own pageant in order to give more chances to aspiring beauty queens.
