Fil-Japanese Karateka Sakura Alforte Bags Gold from Karate League in Spain

Filipino-Japanese Karateka Sakura Alforte struck a gold medal in the 2023 Women’s Individual Kata in Karate 1 Youth League A in Coruña, Spain.

Sakura Alforte has already qualified for the 32nd Southeast Asian (SEA) Games by earning gold. Alforte, who lives in Tokyo, defeated nine competitors in the U21 kata female division to win the Philippines’ only gold medal in the tournament.

Based on the report, Alforte defeated Switzerland’s Lanyfer Miano for second place, while Maisa Caridade and Natacha Fernandes, both from Portugal, won bronze. Miano, the silver medalist, is also a Filipino Swiss.

Alforte recently earned two gold medals in the Under 21 and Senior Women’s Individual Kata at the 10th Southeast Asian Karatedo Federation Championships held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium. Alforte was born in the Philippines to a Filipino father and a Japanese mother.

Alforte is one of the country’s greatest bets in the sport as the squad attempts to avenge its heartbreak at last year’s Hanoi Games, where it failed to win a gold and took home eight bronze medals.

Aside from Alforte, world No. 3 Junna Tsukii and World Championship veteran and SEA Games gold medalist Jamie Lim will lead the country’s campaign in the Cambodian capital.
