Immigration Officer who Allowed Clearances of Human Trafficking Victims Sacked

The Bureau of Immigration (BI) sacked an officer for allegedly allowing the clearances of human trafficking victims.

The BI discharged one of the immigration officials suspected of cooperating with human trafficking syndicates on Thursday. According to BI commissioner Norman Tansingco, the anonymous officer stated that the three Filipinas were cleared to sail to Lebanon and serve as domestic servants.

He claimed the women posed as tourists and sought to board an Air Asia flight to Kuala Lumpur on April 21. According to the article, they were traveling abroad, but they eventually revealed that their destination was Lebanon, where they would labor.

They were recruited by someone named “Helen” whom they met on Facebook, according to the passengers. “Helen” issued their travel documents and told them to deal with the designated immigration officer, based on the report.

“They also disclosed that they were all allegedly instructed by their recruiter to queue for clearance at a specific immigration booth. The officer who cleared the victims has since been relieved of his duties, and is undergoing investigation,” said Tansingco.

During the event, the official stated that “corruption has no place” in the bureau. Immediate action against employees who may be conspiring with these syndicates will serve as a strong deterrent to others who may be considering doing the same, he insisted.

Meanwhile, the victims of human trafficking were sent to the Inter-Agency Against Trafficking for investigation. The authorities will also prosecute their recruiters.
