DICT Receives Requests from Telcos for SIM Registration Deadline Extension
DICT – The Department of Information and Communications Technology spoke on the deadline for SIM registration amid the requests of the telecommunications companies.
SIM registration is now mandated to all SIM card users in the Philippines by law. The SIM Registration Act was the first bill signed by President Bongbong Marcos into law. The push was in the pursuit to trim down incidents of scamming and other negative actions.
The government set a deadline for SIM card users to register their SIM cards. The SIM cards that will not be registered by April 26 will be deactivated as set by the Department of Information and Communications Technology or more commonly called DICT.
New SIM cards sold by telcos required registration. The different telecommunication companies has set up different platforms and ways that users can conveniently register their SIM cards.
Nearing the deadline set by DICT for SIM card registration, there are a lot of calls from telecommunication companies for its extension. The agency recently spoke on the requests for deadline extension.
In a statement released by DICT, the agency said that there is no changes on the deadline set for SIM card registration this April 26. The agency also expressed encouragement to everyone “to register to promote the responsible use of SIMs”.
Furthermore, the agency stressed that the SIM card registration will “provide law enforcement agencies the necessary tools to crack down on perpetrators who use SIMs for their crime”. Unregistered SIM cards will result to their deactivation barring the users from receiving and sending calls and text messages.
