Brazilian Triplets Become Nuns to Serve the Lord & Fulfill Their Dreams

Triplets in Brazil, all became nuns to serve the Lord, as they had dreamed of since they were children.

The triplets, María Gorete dos Santos, María de Lourdes dos Santos, and María Aparecida dos Santos, are now 57 years old and were raised in a large Catholic family with 17 siblings in the state of Bahia, Brazil.

According to a report by the Catholic News Agency published in the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) News, the triplets felt a strong calling to become nuns from a young age.

When they were children, they were fortunate enough to meet an Italian nun, Sister Ricarda, who visited their community. They were inspired by her and felt a deep desire to follow in her footsteps. As they grew older, their passion for becoming nuns only intensified.

A priest who celebrated mass in their region learned about their desire to enter the convent and contacted the superior of a convent in Bahía. The superior agreed to take in the young women, and María de Lourdes was the first to respond to their calling in 1984.

However, because their younger siblings still needed help at home, María Aparecida only joined the convent a year later. María Gorete followed one year after her younger sister.

“It’s worth leaving everything, leaving the family. It’s not like abandoning the family, but following what Jesus says: If you want to follow me, renounce everything you have, pick up your cross, and follow me. It gives life meaning,” María Gorete said.

The triplets are now members of the Franciscan Congregation of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, where they serve the Lord with all their hearts. They have found great fulfillment in their vocation as nuns and have inspired many with their dedication to their faith and their service to the community.
