Earthquake Today: Magnitude 6.6 Struck Gigmoto, Catanduanes

Phivolcs Releases Bulletin about the Earthquake Today in Struck Gigmoto, Catanduanes, April 4, 2023

EARTHQUAKE TODAY – The Phivolcs recorded a 6.6 magnitude quake in Gigmoto, Catanduanes, Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

Following the 7.3 magnitude earthquake that jolted a part of Davao Occidental a few weeks ago, another strong quake was recorded by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs). The quake hit a part of Davao Occidental. According to the agency, it had a magnitude of 3.8.

The earthquake that struck Gigmoto, Catanduanes, today, Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at 08:54 PM was tectonic in origin.

It was measured off the coast of Catanduanes and a warning to three provinces to be on alert for larger waves than usual was released.

It has an epicenter of 3.76°N, 125.51°E – 120 km S 88° E of Gigmoto town at a depth of nine kilometers. Intensity II was felt in Palo, Leyte.

According to the post, the provinces of Catanduanes, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar are “to stay away from the beach and not go to the coast.”

This is a result of a “minor sea level disturbance” leading to possible “wave heights of less than one meter above the normal tides” and is higher in enclosed bays and straits.

“It is forecasted that the first tsunami waves will arrive between 09:02 p.m. to 12:54 a.m. 05 Apr 2023 (PST). These waves may continue for hours,” the post said.

This shaking was followed by a couple such as the following:

Magnitude 3.7 at 10:24 PM on April 4, 13.72°N, 125.21°E – 089 km S 86° E of Gigmoto (Catanduanes)

Magnitude 4.9 at 10:43 PM on April 4, 13.89°N, 125.60°E – 131 km N 85° E of Gigmoto (Catanduanes)

Magnitude 2.4 at 11:06 PM on April 4, 13.65°N, 125.50°E – 121 km S 83° E of Gigmoto (Catanduanes)
