Phivolcs Clarifies Video of Taal Volcano Eruption Circulating Online is Fake News
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology (Phivolc) clarified that the video of the Taal volcano eruption circulating online is fake news.
According to the Phivolcs, the video circulating on social media depicting Taal Volcano spouting plumes is incorrect. On Saturday, April 1, the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) revealed a Facebook page reportedly broadcasting Taal volcanic updates.
“TaALERT” was the name of the Facebook page. However, the council issued an advisory to clarify falsehoods spreading on social media about the status of Taal Volcano in Taal town, Batangas.
The council emphasized that what was widely circulated on social media was false. According to the council’s advisory, the Taal Volcano remains in Alert Level 1 status, according to the Phivolcs.
According to the Office of Civil Defense 4-A Regional Director Maria Theresa Escalano, who also leads the RDRRMC-Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), the irresponsible actions of the people behind the TaALERT social media account will not be tolerated and will be held accountable.
Escalano also cautioned the public against disseminating unverified or conflicting information, which could generate fear and confusion. Many social media users circulated unconfirmed claims about increased alert levels, fake tsunami and earthquake alerts, and even photos of maps and volcanoes that do not adequately portray Taal Volcano.
While some of these posts may have been made with good intentions, misinformation causes more harm than good. Rumors and incorrect information distributed widely on social media may endanger public safety and cause panic and terror.
