Ship Owner to Face Charges After Tanker Sunken in Mindoro and Causes Oil Spill
The local government of Mindoro will file charges against the owner of the tanker ship who got sunken and caused an oil spill.
Officials in Pola, Oriental Mindoro, are preparing to file a complaint in connection with the oil spill that happened in Oriental Mindoro as a result of an oil tanker sinking on February 28. Last week, during the height of the northeast monsoon, or “amihan,” the occurrence occurred.
The resulting petroleum spill contaminated miles of coastline on Mindoro’s eastern shore, as well as environmentally sensitive areas and fishing grounds. More than a dozen people have reported symptoms of VOC inhalation, and a fishing restriction has put thousands of local fishermen out of work.

According to a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) announcement, the local government of Pola would organize a task force to pursue the owners and operators of the sinking MT Princess Empress for the damage caused by the incident. The Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) will undertake an evaluation in the affected barangays first.
Government officials have also gathered to examine ways to keep oil from spreading in the seas. The cleanup activities will also continue on Friday, March 10, with the assistance of fishermen who will be compensated by the government through the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s cash-for-work program (DSWD).
To ensure their safety, the Department of Health (DOH) requires all cleaning workers to wear full-face respirators. Based on the report, the DOH also stated that toxicologists will be monitoring the cleanup groups.
