Ex-President Duterte Appeals to Ban Fraternities in Schools Following Hazing Deaths
Ex-President Rodrigo Duterte appealed to ban fraternities and sororities in schools throughout the country following hazing deaths.
The former President believes that now is the time to outlaw all fraternities and sororities in all Philippine schools. Duterte stated on an SMNI show that if they do not want what happened to John Matthew Salilig to happen again, they should keep students away from fraternities.
“If you want really an honest answer, if you want to do away with hazing and other harmful practices in a fraternity, iyong solusyon ni [Juan Ponce] Enrile eh tama talaga, totally banned iyong fraternities pati sororities in our schools,” said Duterte.
Duterte admits to being a member of the fraternity and having been a victim of hazing. He also revealed that he is a member of Lex Talionis at San Beda and that Juan Ponce Enrile is a member of Sigma Rho at the University of the Philippines (UP).
“Pati si Enrile- Enrile is Sigma Rho yan sa UP. Ako Lex Talionis ako sa San Beda. Sa San Beda ako nag-graduate eh. Alam mo sa totoo lang, about 3 years earlier, ako, as President, signing the document, and to all the justices sa Supreme Court na classmate ko sa San Beda, pati frat ko, signed a document addressed to our fraternity to stop h-zing. Pero alam mo hindi ito nadadala ng batas,” he said.
“Mismo kasi ako dumaan rin. Pati ‘yan si Enrile sigurado dumaan ‘yan. I don’t know if I’m behaving correctly but dumaan din ako eh. As a matter of fact, I had to hospitalize ako sa Davao Doc. massive na trauma, hematoma sa palo,” he added during the show.
Over the weekend, Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Juan Ponce Enrile stated that fraternities and sororities that have been accused of hazing and other illegal conduct should be liquidated to prevent their members from continuously breaking the law.
Enrile stated on his weekly SMNI network program “Dito sa Bayan ni Juan” that “initiations” are acceptable provided they are intended to test the mentality, integrity, loyalty, and physical aptitude of candidates or applicants. Yet, he stated that initiation rites should not bring physical harm or, worse, death.
