Delivery Man Nabbed for Carrying Mummy Inside Delivery Bag

Food Delivery Man Found Carrying Mummy Inside Delivery Bag

Authorities arrested a food delivery man after they found out he was carrying a mummy inside his delivery bag in Peru.

Authorities in Peru have taken a mummified human from the house of a former food delivery man who claimed to have possessed it for three decades. The pre-Hispanic mummy is thought to be between 600 and 800 years old, according to experts.

The mummy was discovered in an isothermal bag that the man had used to transport meals to people’s houses in the past. Julio Cesar Bermejo, 26, was identified as the delivery man, according to a CNN article.

“A 26-year-old man had a delivery bag labeled ‘Pedidos Ya.’ Inside they found a mummy,” senior agent Marco Antonio Ortega, who is a spokesperson for Puno region’s National Police, told CNN. Pedidos Ya is a Latin American food delivery app.

According to a government official, Bermejo will remain in jail as detectives investigate the case. Bermejo informed local reporters that “Juanita,” the mummy, was like his spiritual girlfriend.

“At home, she’s in my room. She sleeps with me. I take care of her,” he said in a video that went viral on social media.

Bermejo claims that his father brought the mummy home about 30 years ago. Based on the report, the pre-Hispanic relic was a “mummified adult male human, possibly from the eastern area of Puno,” a place in the Peruvian Andes about 1,300 kilometers (808 miles) southeast of Lima, according to the Ministry of Culture.

“It’s not a Juanita, it’s a Juan,” a ministry specialist said, adding that the mummy was at least 45 years old. In the fetal position, the body was wrapped in bandages. Police discovered the remains in Bermejo’s bag while monitoring a park in Puno, where he had been hanging out with pals.

Many mummies have already been discovered in Peru, which is home to hundreds of archaeological sites from various civilizations that existed prior to and after the Inca Empire. Archeologists discovered a mummy estimated to be 800 to 1,200 years old near the country’s capital city of Lima in 2021.
