Over 300 BuCor Staff with No Civil Service Eligibility to Lose Jobs

Over 300 BuCor Staff to Lose Jobs Over Lack of Civil Service Eligibility

Over 300 staff of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) were about to lose their jobs over lack of civil service eligibility.

According to José Ventura Aspiras, the legal counsel for BuCor employees, the personnel failed to meet the mandate of the law that requires them to have a college degree or pass the civil service professional exam. According to the Civil Service Commission, workers promoted from Level 1 to Level 2 were given 5 years to comply with the rules.

The five-year term began in March 2018 and is slated to end on March 15, 2023. The Bureau of Corrections Act of 2013, passed by former President Benigno Aquino III’s administration, aims to renovate buildings and jails, restructure the agency, and increase professionalism in its ranks, based on the report.

According to the law, new applicants for uniformed correctional or reformation personnel posts must be college graduates and between the ages of 21 and 40. According to Aspiras, the impacted people have been in the service for 30 to 40 years and are demanding a two-year extension as well as assistance from the prisons bureau, an associated agency of the Department of Justice.

It is believed to make up for the year lost owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, which could have been used to fulfill the requirements. Aspiras went on to say that the employees are hoping for the backing of Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla, who will champion their cause.

They are still waiting for word on the extension plan. The legal grounds for the extension, as well as the practical reasons, are only now becoming clear. The bureau and the department are both open to our ideas. Aspiras suggested that this could result in a win-win situation.
