Filipina Loses Money after Scammed by Foreigner from Dating App

Filipina Got Scammed by Foreigner She Met on a Dating App

A Filipina files complaints against a foreigner she met on a dating app after being scammed and losing her money.

A foreigner she met on a dating app allegedly cheated on her and later blackmailed her. The article claims that “Sarah” (not her real name) met an African American on a dating app, but the nearly two-week courtship developed into a nightmare.

Sarah received a message from the man while he was in the furniture store one day before their scheduled weekend getaway in the province, where she had already paid money. The foreigner, according to Sarah, told her that his cards were not working and that he required her to transfer money.

“I already had a bad feeling about it, na medyo ang laki ng amount,” sabi ni Sarah.

When she failed to send money, the foreigner threatened her. Based on the report, the foreign fraudster gave her a deadline to give the money or he would post the victim’s sensitive images on social media.

“[Y]ou’re a nice person and I didn’t mean no harm since you wanna be rude to me, you have until 12am send 40k to the [mobile wallet] and I’ll delete your n*des or watch me send it to all your friends on facebook,” said the man.

“I have deactivated my accounts, even my social media, because he was able to get into my social media. He has checked my contacts. That’s what he blackmailed after I wouldn’t transfer more money to him,” said Sarah.

According to NBI Cybercrime division leader Chris Paz, this is “typical” catfishing. According to Paz, this is the establishment of a fraudulent internet account or profile in order to become a victim, with the ultimate goal of earning or requesting money from the would-be victim.

“Sa kabutihan po ay hindi natuloy ang pagme-meet up nila. Hindi natin alam kung anong maari pang gawin ng scammer na ito sa biktima,” Paz added.

Even verified accounts can be hacked. The case is being investigated by the NBI Cybercrime Unit. The NBI warned the public to be cautious and critical at all times, and to never provide personal information to online dates.

“Pag iyong online boyfriend nanghihingi na ng pera, sigurado po red flag iyan, scam po iyan. Huwag na huwag po kayo magbibigay ng pera at huwag kayo maniniwala sa anong drama,” Paz noted.
