TURKEY-SYRIA EARTHQUAKE DEATHS – UN relief chief Martin Griffiths fear that the number of deaths due to the quake will reach 50,000.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake that rocked the people in Turkey and Syria from their beds early morning a few days ago left thousands of deaths. It brought buildings and huge structures down and many died in the collapse of these structures.
A strong 7.8 magnitude earthquake jolted Turkey and Syria last week. It hit at 4:00 a.m. while most people were still asleep and it broughts structures including tall buildings down. A lot of households were also destroyed and many people were buried in debris.
A few days after the natural event, the Turkey-Syria earthquake deaths have reached 23,000. Based on a recent report on ABS-CBN News, the number of deaths has reached 28,000 now amid ongoing rescue operations. UN relief chief Martin Griffiths fears that the deaths will reach 50,000 or double the count citing the failure to provide sufficient aid for the quake victims in Syria.
The ep;icenter of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake was located 23 kilometers east of Nurdagi in Turkey province Gaziantep. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), it had a depth of 24.1 kilometers.
Based on the report, the UN Relief Chief expressed that the quake victims in Syria “rightly feel abandone” following the failure in providing them with relief assistance. Griffiths further expressed that the victims were “looking for international help that hasn’t arrived”.
The UN Relief Chief recognized that it is his duty and obligation to correct the failure as fast as they can. Currently, thousands of rescuers are scattered in the areas hit by the strong 7.8 magnitude quake in the pursuit to take both living and dead bodies from the debris. Among those who were recently-pulled by the rescuers are dead bodies of a seven-month-old baby and a teenage girl.
