Ai-Ai delas Alas explained her impersonation of Mayor Joy Belmonte
Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas apologized to Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte for the “Ligay Delmonte” skit that she did during the 2022 election season.
Political satire is a normal propaganda tool to campaign for a certain politician or attack a certain politician during election seasons. However, some people would say that political satire is too much or already defamatory.
This is what happened to Ai-Ai last year. After her “Ligaya Delmonte” skit was released on social media, the Kapuso comedienne received criticisms from many netizens. She was even declared persona non grata in Quezon City for supposedly shaming the official logo of the city.
In a recent interview on King of Talk Boy Abunda’s Fast Talk on GMA, Ai-Ai delas Alas explained her side. She admitted that she did not know about the term persona non grata until she was declared as one. “Hindi ko akalain na gano’n pala ‘yon kasi nung ginawa ko po ‘yon [ay] bilang artista po,” Ai-Ai said.
She also shared that she told director Darryl Yap to delete some parts of the skit because she was concerned that it would hurt Mayor Joy Belmonte. Then, the comedienne apologized to the Quezon City Mayor.
She also stressed that, as an actress, she only did what she was told to do. “But since ayun na nga, na-offend siya—pasensya na mayora na ako pala ay nakasakit sa ‘yo, pero artista lang ako. Kumbaga, kaya nagawa ko ‘yon kasi inutos lang sa akin,” Ai-Ai said.
The Comedy Concert Queen added that she had no intention to hurt anyone and she did not that Mayor Joy will be hurt by what she did.
