Here’s the official statement of Ai-Ai delas Alas to the “Persona Non Grata” issue
The legal team of Comedy Concert Queen Ai-Ai delas Alas released a statement on the resolution of Quezon City Council declaring her “persona non grata.”
This declaration from QC was prompted by the video that Ai-Ai did under the direction of Darryl Yap who was also declared “persona non grata.” In the said video, the Kapuso comedienne portrayed the character of Ligaya Belmonte.
For the Quezon City Council, Ai-Ai and Direk Darryl disrespected the city’s logo that was seen in the video. When this news surfaced online, the Comedy Concert Queen shared a video spreading good vibes, as if showing that she is unbothered by this issue.
On June 8, the legal team of Ai-Ai delas Alas formally released a statement regarding the resolution. Atty. Charo V. Rejuso-Munsayac, the comedienne’s lawyer stressed that the said video was a “satire”, a form of “parody”. “It is not intended to be a statement of fact and is clearly not meant to be taken seriously by the audience,” the lawyer said.
Atty. Rejuso-Musayac also said that the video was intended to be watched as a whole and the details were obviously fictitious, including the “seal”. “It is unfortunate that the city council is nitpicking to find a basis to curb freedom of expression in the guise of defending a perceived dishonor,” the legal counsel of Ai-Ai said.
The camp of the comedienne also condemns this act of the Quezon City Council that endangers the freedom of expression of artists and their livelihood because “it appears to be a form of cancellation making them wary to take on similar works in fear that public officials will retaliate in similar fashion.”
Although this resolution would not physically affect Ai-Ai delas Alas, her lawyer said that they will continue to monitor statements against their client. Here is the full statement, courtesy of GMA Network.
