Habal-Habal Driver Arrested for Selling Illegal Drug in Cebu
Police authorities arrested a habal-habal driver who becomes an illegal drug peddler due to a lack of income in Cebu.
A motorcycle-for-hire driver was seized by drug enforcement police after he was found carrying half a kilo of suspected illegal substances. The culprit was identified as Mark Anthony Cabatas, 43, of Sitio Nazareth, Barangay Buhisan in the aforementioned city.
According to the report, the driver turned over illegal drugs worth around P3.7 million during an anti-illegal drug operation on M. Lazarte Street, Barangay Parian, Cebu City. The joint operation was carried out by Parian Police Station 1 operatives led by Major Efren Diaz Jr. and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency-Central Visayas (PDEA 7).
Diaz stated that Cabatas was under surveillance for a month before to the operation. Although before that, they did business with Cabatas twice, but the latter proved evasive.
“So now is the third time, we’re grateful that we succeeded and we didn’t expect him to carry this big and that he is capable of disposing of ten kilos in a month),” Diaz said.
“His coverage is the whole of Cebu City. He is also a model delivery driver in neighboring cities,” he added in the local language.
In his defense, Catabas stated that he engaged in illegal drug operations due to his limited earnings as a habal-habal driver. He claims that he used to earn P1,000 per day collecting passengers, but that he now only earns P300.
Cabatas alleged that he received no compensation for the drugs entrusted to him, save for the residual drugs, which he would sell. Cabatas will face accusations for violating Republic Act 9165, often known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
