House plenary unanimously voted for the Eddie Garcia Act
The Eddie Garcia Act or House Bill 1270 was approved by the House of Representatives on Monday.
This bill was prompted by the heartbreaking incident that happened to Philippine showbiz icon Eddie Garcia. To recall, the veteran star died in 2019 after he accidentally tripped over a loose wire while filming a TV series.
In 2020, lawmakers were inspired to create a law that will protect actors, as well as workers in showbiz in order for them to have a safe and just working environment. This will also mandate the benefits and compensation that the entertainment industry workers will receive.
The bill also states that the employer would be required to adhere to all laws related to workers’ occupational safety and health standards, based on the report from The Philippine Star.
The Eddie Garcia Act passed the final reading. This is a consolidated version of six related bills. This included the bill authored by Garcia’s stepson, Rep. Mikee Romero (1-Pacman Party-list).
Rep. Alfred Delos Santos (Ang Probinsyano party-list) who co-authored the bill said that this will be beneficial to everyone in the entertainment industry as this will provide fair working conditions and compensation to workers.
The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is required by the Eddie Garcia Act to create a tripartite council. This council will consolidate the issues being raised, as well as, of workers in the film, television, and radio entertainment industry.
“It is my hope that the Tripartite Council being established in the Eddie Garcia bill will exceed expectations based on its legislated design and that workers will justly assert their rights on self-organization and collective bargaining,” Delos Santos said, adding that the bill can be a “prototype of other workers’ welfare bills.”
