Greenhills Shopping Center is Included in Notorious Markets for Counterfeits List
The United States Trade Representative (USTR) has included Greenhills Shopping Center in the list of notorious markets for counterfeiting and piracy.
Greenhills Shopping Center was classified as one of the “2022 Notorious Markets for Counterfeiting and Piracy” by the United States Trade Representative. The mall in question is the only one mentioned in the study.
According to the USTR, many of the businesses at this mall currently sell counterfeit goods like electronics, perfumes, watches, shoes, accessories, and fashion items. The list contains 39 online and 33 physical establishments around the world that are suspected of being involved in or facilitating counterfeiting or copyright theft, including Greenhills in San Juan.
“Law enforcement authorities have taken action to seize counterfeit luxury goods, notably during a high-profile raid in April 2022. Right holders report enforcement activity in the form of warning letters and subsequent suspension of business, but the targets of enforcement often evade such efforts by moving the location of their stalls,” it said.
The National Bureau of Investigation raided the mall in April 2022, confiscating $1.4 million in counterfeit merchandise. Nonetheless, Greenhills Shopping Center “has signaled a willingness to cooperate with authorities, said USTR, based on the report of GMA News.
The Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) announced on Thursday that they had devised a strategy to combat the alleged selling of counterfeit goods at Greenhills Shopping Center. Members of the National Committee on Intellectual Property Rights are now reviewing IPOPHL’s suggested approach to address counterfeiting in the mall.
