Female Plane Passenger Arrested Over Bomb Joke in Davao City

Authorities arrested a female passenger after causing panic for cracking a bomb joke at Davao City airport.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP), the Philippine National Police Aviation Security Group (PNP-AVSEU) apprehended a plane passenger who made a bomb joke. The suspect was identified as a Pangasinan-based foreign Filipino worker.

According to the report, the 59-year-old female passenger was arrested on Sunday, January 29, at the Davao International Airport for making a bomb joke on board Cebu Pacific Flight 5J978. The female passenger had just returned from a four-day trip with her two sisters.

Police said the woman, Annabelle Macose, told a flight attendant in jest: “May bomba dun sa luggage ko”. The joke was promptly reported to the captain, who requested security help through the Davao Control Tower.

Personnel from the PNP-AVSEU boarded the jet, along with airline agents commanded by the manager of Davao International Airport, to offload and arrest Macose. Macose was then investigated and returned to the Sasa Police Station for detention.

After Macose made a bomb joke, the Cebu Pacific flight requested security help through the Davao Control Tower. Meanwhile, the remaining 220 passengers were deplaned while the aircraft was moved and all baggage was re-screened, according to CAAP.

The flight, which was supposed to leave Davao for Manila at 6:45 p.m. At 9:11 p.m., I departed from the airport, on the same day. Based on the report, Macose was accused of breaching PD 1727, the anti-bomb joke law, which carries a P40,000 fine and a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

Although her relatives regarded her as a natural comedian, Corporal Jefry Sabulbero of the Davao International Airport Police advised that making bomb jokes in public settings, particularly in the aviation business, is frowned upon. Macose cooperated with investigators and admitted to making the mistake.
