Raffy Tulfo Files Bill Seeking to Move Weekend Holidays to Monday

Senator Raffy Tulfo Pushes Bill Moving Weekend Holidays to Monday

Senator Raffy Tulfo files a House bill that seeks holidays that fall into the weekend to be moved to Monday.

The Senator introduced Senate Bill No. 1651, which seeks to shift Saturday and Sunday holidays to Monday in order to have long weekends throughout the year. This bill amends RA No. 9492, often known as the Holiday Economics Law.

“Holidays are integral in order to honor and commemorate special events or traditions with cultural or religious significance,” said Tulfo.

“The Philippines celebrates 18 national holidays annually, four of which are considered ‘special non-working holidays.’ These aforementioned days may at times fall on a weekend making them feel less celebratory for individuals,” he added.

Tulfo noted that such a bill will improve the country’s internal tourism, and it will also provide a ‘work-life balance’ to employees and students, based on the report. The measure also recommends that the President release a proclamation on the first Monday of December listing the proclaimed non-working days for the next year.

Former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed Republic Act No. 9492, which aims to relocate regular and special holidays to the nearest Monday in order to boost domestic tourism in the country. This was terminated by the issue of Proclamation No. 84 during the tenure of former President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III.
