A group of friends earns various reactions from internet users for using popcorn as a firecracker on New Year’s Eve.
A few days ago, most people in different countries all around the world including the Philippines celebrated New Year’s Day. Many of us prepared delicious dishes, extravagant parties, gifts, and noisy stuff to meet Year of the Water Rabbit.
Firecrackers and fireworks have been already a part of Filipino culture and tradition throughout the decades. People believe that noises from this stuff can drive evil or bad spirits away.
The Facebook page “Malakas” has shared video footage of a group of friends who used popcorn as a firecracker during the celebration of New Year’s Eve. The video circulates online and elicits comments from the netizens.
In the video, it can be seen that the group set up a butane stove and a frying pan along the road. They poured a handful of corn bits into the pan and wait until it popped. The popcorn served as their firecrackers during the holiday celebration.
The popcorn popped everywhere and scattered along the road, which is quite inappropriate. It could cause disturbance and inconvenience to motorists. The group received criticisms from the netizens for wasting food, especially during this time of the pandemic.
However, the group did it just for fun. The video has a caption: “HAPPY NEW YEAR”.
