Philippine communist leader Jose Maria Sison died on December 16, 2022, at the age of 83. He passed away 2 weeks after he got confined in a hospital in the Netherlands.
Sison founded the Philippine Communist Party, whose military wing – the New People’s Army (NPA), has been fighting one of the world’s longest-running insurgencies. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the conflict between the NPA and the Philippine government.
Joma Sison has been living in Europe since the late 1980s, following his release from prison following the fall of dictator Ferdinand Marcos, whose son was elected president in a May election this year.
The self-exiled communist leader was placed on a terrorist watch list in the United States in 2002, preventing him from traveling. The party said Sison died peacefully around 8:40 p.m.

Based on a report from ABS-CBN, afternoon on December 27, the ceremony ended with the last farewell for Joma Sison, followed immediately by his cremation. It started with the playing of the original Sison tribute song.

The representative of the Norwegian government who helped in the peace negotiation between the NDFP and the Philippine government also spoke. Representatives of various communist organizations such as the German Maoist-Leninist Party (MLPD) and the Belgium Workers Party also attended and gave a speech.
According to the report, one of Sison’s sons also gave a speech. He said, “He was generous with his time whenever I visited. Whenever he saw my FB photos of travel, he always asked me to drop by the Netherlands. We decided to make a trip in March 2023. This is one lesson in my life that I didn’t visit sooner. I’m grateful for the memories we enjoyed together. His sharp memory always amazes me and his ability to think outside the box is remarkable.”
Sison’s wife Julie de Lima said she will miss her spouse. “The pain squeezes my heart everytime I breathe, it will be only eased until I join you…You left so many notes for so many book projects we planned. Love bound us on the day that we knew each other and I shall always love you,” she said.
