GCash Warns Public against Fake Sim Card Registration Links

GCash Warns against Fake Links Amid Start of Sim Card Registration

E-wallet application GCash warned the public against fake Sim Card Registration links amid the start of registration.

With the 180-day SIM registration period beginning this Tuesday, December 27, popular mobile wallet Gcash has warned the public to be wary of scammers. Fraudsters allegedly use bogus links that appear to be used to register SIM cards.

“We would like to reiterate our warnings to our users that GCash will never send links via SMS, email, and messaging apps. We have been receiving reports that some telco subscribers are getting messages that their accounts have been restricted if they don’t pre-register their SIM card,” said Winsley Bangit, chief customer officer of GCash.

“Our users should never click the link provided in these messages and instead check the official channels of their telco providers for the information on how to register their SIM card starting December 27,” he added.

Based on the report, this ensures that the mobile wallet’s accounts and funds are secure while the registration process is in progress. Despite this, the public was asked to register the SIM card with their individual telco operator in order to avoid disruptions in access to GCash accounts associated with the number.

Recently, a concerned netizen revealed scammers’ new method of operation: sim card registration. According to the netizen, he received an email about the Sim Card Registration Act.

The email invited him to register his phone number and sent a link to a website where he could submit his details. The connected website is nearly identical in style to the mobile application and online wallet G-Cash. Based on his post, he is requested to enter his phone number in the form.
