BuCor OIC Gregorio Catapang to File Plunder Case vs Gerald Bantag

Suspended BuCor Chief Gerald Bantag to Face Plunder Case filed by OIC Gregorio Catapang

Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Officer-in-Charge (OIC) Gregorio Catapang will file a plunder case against suspended chief Gerald Bantag.

The controversial suspended BuCor chief will face another case after BuCor officer-in-charge assured that he will sue him for plunder. This is due to the unfinished prison construction project even though P1 billion has already been paid.

Catapang Plunder Gerald Bantag

“Yes, I will file a plunder,” Catapang said in a radio interview. Catapang said that just 60% of the BuCor project has been completed, despite the fact that it should have been completed at 95% pursuant to the budget.

“Imagine P1 billion is the government’s money for the construction of prison cells. That’s where the BuCor should be decongested. Well, think about it, 95% has already been charged, already taken, which is already money. Well, it’s only 60% done. No roof. How will the PDLs be accommodated there? So our reform agenda was also delayed,” Catapang said.

According to Bantag’s legal counsel, Rocky Balisong, they will respond to the complaint in the correct forum. Bantag was suspended following the death of Jun Villamor, the inmate accused of acting as a go-between in the attempt to assassinate journalist Percy Lapid.

Bantag has since been tied to a number of scandals, including being accused of being one of the masterminds behind the deaths of Lapid and Villamor. He categorically disputed the claim.

It was also alleged that he was digging up Yamashita treasure at the New Bilibid Prison excavation site, which he explained was a diving pool. Two gang leaders at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) said on Monday that they will file a case against Bantag, who reportedly stabbed them while inebriated.
