Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach shared her thoughts on “utang na loob” mentality which is a part of the Filipino culture that some people think has become toxic.
It is quite a common scenario in Filipino culture to feel indebted to someone who has previously done a good deed for another person. However, in some situations, this has become a toxic trait.
Based on the article in the Philippines’ Ultimate Showbiz Hub, Pia talked about “utang na loob” during the recent episode of Holding Space, an online show that aims to tackle mental health and wellness.
The show features different individuals and key personalities to discuss their experiences. She shared a teaser of this on her Instagram page. During the show, Pia Wurtzbach shared her thoughts on “utang na loob” which is being observed by many Pinoys but it has resulted in bad circumstances at times.
“May isa akong naalala na toxic culture ng Filipinos, ‘yung utang na loob, diba? Kasi parang walang kamatayan na utang na loob. Parang kailan ba mababayaran ang utang na iyan? Parang ka ;pag may mabuti kang ginawa sa isa, laging meron inaasahang kapalit,” Pia Wurtzbach said.
The third Pinay Miss Universe quipped that she can relate to this topic but she did not cite a situation why she could say that.
In the comment section of her IG post, Pia received different reactions from netizens. “My late Uncle’s words about this stuck with me, he said “Pag ang utang na loob sinumbat sa’yo bayad na yun,” Instagram user @bad_jowjow shared.
However, there were netizens who viewed this from a different perspective. “I think I like our Filipino culture na “UTANG NA LOOB” kasi dito sa America wala yan eh, kaya marami dito mga elders binabalewala na ng mga kamag-anak. Pero dapat yung utang na loob is voluntary giving, yung hindi ka sinisingil. Nakaka buwisit din yun,” IG user @retchellient commented.
Many netizens also commented that “utang na loob” becomes toxic when a person is forcing the other person to pay for it.
