283 Sabungeros Arrested in Central Visayas Over Illegal Online Sabong Operations
Authorities arrested 283 “sabungeros” over alleged online sabong (cockfighting) illegal operations in Central Visayas.
According to Police Brig. Gen. Roderick Augustus Alba, director of the Police Regional Office, a total of 283 people have been arrested in Central Visayas in just six days after the regional police intensified their campaign. They also strengthened intelligence-gathering and information-sharing in local communities to hunt down operators and their talpakers (bettors).
“The operation of online sabong is already illegal because of a presidential order earlier this year. I am warning those who are continuously defying this order to stop, otherwise, we will relentlessly run after you,” Alba said.
He said, the aggressive campaign against e-sabong in Central Visayas is also based on the directive of Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Rodolfo Azurin due to reports that online cockfighting guerilla operations are rampant again in some parts of the country. According to the PNP report, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are the target of illegal online dating.
Based on the report, they confiscated up to P156,000 in bets during the six-day operation from December 5 to 10. They have already filed 109 cases in connection with our aggressive drive against online cockfighting, Alba said.
It can be remembered that former president Rodrigo Duterte ordered the banning of the operation of online cockfighting. This is due to a series of violence and the missing of several cockfighters.
