Hidilyn Diaz Wins Three Gold Medals In 2022 IWF World Championships

HIDILYN DIAZ – Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz bagged three gold medals at the 2022 IWF World Championships held in Bogota, Colombia on Thursday.

On Wednesday, December 7 (Thursday, December 8, Manila time), in Bogota, Colombia, Hidilyn Diaz finally made her mark by dominating the women’s 55kg event in the World Weightlifting Championships.

The 32-year-old Olympic champion beat out the home favorites Rosalba Morales of Colombia and Ana Gabriela Lopez of Mexico with a total lift of 207kg after clearing 93kg on snatch and 114kg on clean and jerk.

In addition to her crowded trophy cabinet, which already has gold medals from the Olympics, the Asian Games, and the Southeast Asian Games, the victory saw Hidilyn Diaz add that elusive global title.

The Pinay champ repeatedly missed out on the gold medal in previous world championships, having to settle for bronze in the women’s 53 kg in 2015, 2017, and 2021. But her eagerly anticipated crowning moment finally arrived in Colombia when she won three gold medals in the same competition in which she had won the Philippines its first-ever Olympic title in the Tokyo Games the year prior.

Hidilyn Diaz finished eight kilograms ahead of Morales, who won the silver medal and easily won the snatch and clean and jerk. The top seed Morales’ attempt to win gold in front of her countrymen was hampered by what appeared to be a knee injury as she finished third in the snatch with 89 kg and second in the clean and jerk with 110 kg for a total lift of 199 kg.

Morales attempted to exert pressure on Diaz by lifting 115 kg, but her last two efforts at the clean and jerk resulted in back-to-back failures. Diaz attempted to add weight to her lead after winning the gold, but she failed.

With a final lift of 198 kg, Lopez won bronze after clearing 108 kg for third place in the clean and jerk and 90 kg for second place in the snatch.

Nestor Colonia began the Philippines’ world championship run earlier by placing eighth in the men’s 55kg division.

In the women’s 49kg division, Lovely Inan and Rosegie Ramos placed 13th and 17th, respectively.

The Philippines has 4 more medal chances as Elreen Ando (women’s 59kg), Dave Lloyd Pacaldo (men’s 67kg), Vanessa Sarno, and Kristel Macrohon (women’s 71kg) have yet to see them compete.
