Town Mayor Urges Boracay Tourists to Pay P100 for Their Insurance
The Mayor of Malay town in Aklan province urges tourists visiting Boracay Island to pay P100 for their insurance.
Before entering the most well-known resort island in the nation, all visitors must get travel insurance for P100 each, according to Mayor Frolibar Bautista. The money is for their safety, according to the mayor of the Malay town in the Aklan province where Boracay is situated.
“Yes, tourists have to pay insurance. It’s for their protection,” said Bautista.
The Malay Municipal Ordinance No. 2021-444, or the insurance scheme for “bodily injuries or death that tourists may encounter” while in Boracay, was put into effect on November 23, according to a public notice from the Bautista administration. The cost of travel insurance is added to the environmental and terminal fees that visitors must pay at the jetty port in mainland Malaysia.
According to Bautista, a memorandum of understanding signed by the Malay local government allows a “private entity” to collect travel insurance. He pointed out that the regional administration receives nothing from the deal.
“Ito ay isang pribadong kumpanya. The local government has no share whatsoever,” Bautista said in a phone interview with the Manila Bulletin.
According to an article in the Manila Bulletin, the newly implemented policy confused tourists and tour guides. The purchase of travel insurance is not required, according to Bautista, despite the ordinance’s implementing rules and regulations (IRR) being signed.
Section 5 specifically mandates that all visitors to the island of Boracay pay for travel insurance. Bautista noted that the ordinance has not yet been completely put into effect.
“Pinag-aaralan pa namin ito. Unti-unti ang pagpapatupad,” added Bautista.
