Truth be told that the 13th month pay is one of the things that excite a lot of people when the holiday season comes. It is an extra pay to the employees and its release is mandated by law under the Presidential Decree No. 851.

The 13th month pay is usually given to employees every December. The law mandates that it should be released not later than the 24th day of the last month of the year. It is given to employees who have worked for at least one (1) month in a company.

Are probationary employees entitled to a 13th Month Pay?

Based on the guidelines of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), an employee is entitled to a 13th Month Pay regardless of their employment status in the company as long as they have worked for at least one (1) month. Thus, probationary employees will really get their 13th month pay.

How to Compute 13th Month Pay in the Philippines?

Computing the salary you received for the whole year to get the amount of your 13th month pay is easy. You only need to get the sum of all the basic salary you received, minus your lates and absences, for each month from January to December and divide the sum by 12 – the number of months you worked for the company.

Here’s an example on how to compute the 13th month pay:

  • January – P12,000
  • February – P8,900
  • March – P11,500
  • April – P12,000
  • May – P12,000
  • June – P12,000
  • July – P11,900
  • August – P10,300
  • September – P12,000
  • October – P12,000
  • November – P11,500
  • December – P10,700

Total Salary = P136,800

  • P136,800 / 12 = P11,400 (this is the employee’s 13th month pay)
