Kiko Pangilinan Compares Prices of Onions in Australia vs PH

Kiko Pangilinan Shares the Prices of Onions in Australia Compared to the Philippines

Former Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan shared the prices of onions in Australia compared to the prices in the Philippines.

Pangilinan mentioned that when he visited Australia last week, the cost of onions in the local stores astounded him. Red onions cost P250 per kilogram in the Philippines, but only P112 per kilogram in grocery stores in Australia, according to Pangilinan.

The same is true for white onions, which cost P200 or more per kilogram in the Philippines but only P75 per kilogram in Australia. Pangilinan thinks there is only one way to keep the prices of commodities in the Philippines low.

“The solution is to support our producers, our farmers and fisherfolks,” said Pangilinan.

“Kaya kung nais natin magkaroon ng murang pagkain, murang karne, murang gulay bigyan ng todo na suporta sa ating mga farmers at fisherfolk,” he added.

According to a netizen, middlemen who purchase veggies at extremely low costs and resell them at extremely high prices are to blame for the market’s rising pricing. It couldn’t help but wonder what Pangilinan had done to thwart the aforementioned middlemen on his video.

Meanwhile, the former vice presidential candidate tweeted about the cost of onions and garlic on their September trip to Thailand. Garlic and onions cost twice as much in the Philippines as they do in Thailand, according to him, so there is a significant price differential between the two countries.

His tweet claims that whereas the cost of onions per kilo is roughly 35 baht or P60 in the Philippines, the cost of garlic in Thailand is 50 baht or P85. A kilo of garlic costs P300 and a kilo of onions P400 in the Philippines, according to him.
