JRU to Remove John Amores from the Team, Ban from All Sports

Jose Rizal University (JRU) has decided to remove John Amores from the basketball team as an upgrade for his previous sanction.

The Heavy Bomber player’s punishment from the university has been raised from an indefinite suspension to expulsion from the team. His expulsion from the squad and his immediate exclusion from all JRU sports programs were both announced by the university.

“Contingent with this action: (i) all privileges accruing to Mr. Amores as a student-athlete have been canceled; and (ii) based on the Student Manual of the University, he has been further meted out the penalty of suspension from his classes and has been required to undergo community service,” JRU said in a statement.

According to the GMA News report, the University stated that Amores will also receive therapy from them. They further stated that they would support Amores in adjusting to the stress of what had happened in his early life.

The incident occurred on November 8 during JRU’s game versus De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde. With 3:22 remaining in the contest, Amores became unruly and began punching other players. JRU had apologized for the incident.

Amores had already received an indefinite suspension from the NCAA. Players from Benilde Taine Davis and Jimboy Pasturan also complained about Amores over the incident.

Franz Pumaren, a former basketball coach and representative for Quezon City, urged the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas on Monday to penalize John Amores for the incident. Additionally, Pumaren urged SBP to mandate that all basketball players receive a mental evaluation prior to competition.
