Solon Pushes Mental Check-up to Basketball Players Following Amores Incident
House Deputy Majority Leader and Quezon City Rep. Franz Pumaren wants basketball players to undergo mental check-up following the assault of John Amores.
Pumaren requested the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) to evaluate the rules and regulations of the Philippine basketball leagues. Pumaren said in a privileged speech that a recent game between the College of Saint Benilde (CBS) and Jose Rizal University (JRU) involved an “unfortunate event.”
“I believe that it is high time to revisit the rules and regulations of every Philippine basketball league. We must lift the matches standards rules and regulations to avoid these brawls,” said Pumaren.
Pumaren urged the league’s organizers to hire bouncers or improved security management. Every new member of the league is required, according to the solon, to get their physical and mental health checked.
“Huwag na nating hintayin pa na mangyari ito sa ibang liga. Dapat ang bawat miyembro rin na sasali sa liga ay sumailalim din sa isang mental and physical health checkup. Dapat mayroon din silang clearance sa kanilang doctor na sila ay mentally ang physically fit to play these games,” added Pumaren.
Additionally, coaches ought to urge athletes to speak with life coaches. According to Pumaren, the introduction of social media has increased the pressure on athletes to do well on the field as well as in the classroom, based on the report.
John Amores, a JRU basketball player, was asked by the former basketball coach to acknowledge his error and extend an apology. He bemoaned the poor impression this brawl-riddled game gave of the basketball landscape in the Philippines.
“I also hope that the player from JRU will own up to his mistakes and apologize for what he has caused in the past few months,” said Pumaren.
