José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was a Filipino nationalist, writer, and polymath who lived near the conclusion of the Philippines’ Spanish colonial period. He is revered as the Philippines’ national hero.
The National Filipino hero is popularly known for his novels Noli Me Tángere (1887) and El filibusterismo (1891). He was executed on December 30, 1896 because his novels revealed the cruelty of Spanish people during the colonization period.
A few years ago, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) revealed that Dr. Jose Rizal was an avid player of the lottery and won the jackpot prize with two other bettors way back in 1892.
According to the reports, the three wins P20,000, which is equivalent to P2.5 million in 2022. Rizal won P6,200 as his share of the jackpot in the draw during his exile in Dapitan, Zamboanga del Norte.
Rizal gave P2,000 to his father and P200 to his friend Jose Basa in Hong Kong. The hero used the remaining part of the money to purchase agricultural lands along the coast of Talisay as an investment.
He also used the money to build infrastructure including schools, clinics, and houses in Dapitan. As of this current time, the replicate of those infrastructures can be seen around the town.
However, the Spanish government confiscated the possessions and other properties of Rizal as compensation after he passed away.
