Risa Hontiveros Condemns Lalamove for Lack of Sympathy to Delivery Rider’s Life
Senator Risa Hontiveros strongly condemned the Lalamove company for lack of sympathy to the delivery rider who died while working.
Hontiveros acknowledged Lalamove’s communication with the delivery rider’s family, but the lawmaker harshly criticized the business for showing no pity to the victim. Hontiveros noted in her statement that it is encouraging that Lalamove is getting in touch with Noel Escote’s family.
However, the lawmaker claimed that there were some details of the incident that should be noted in contrast to Lalamove’s assertion that “the victim died without delivering the product.” She added that Lalamove’s claim that it “did not fulfill orders on the day of the incident” “adds insult to injury.”
“On the day he tragically lost his life, Mr. Escote opted to ride his motorcycle to work, even on a holiday, and waited for someone to book his service as a Lalamove rider. Part of the delivery riders’ job is to wait for the order, not just to deliver the order,” Hontiveros insisted.
Another crucial point, according to the lawmaker, is that the victim was discovered riding a motorcycle, which is regarded by our law as a place of employment. She claimed that since he passed away at work, it qualifies as a job-related death.
Based on the report, Hontiveros claimed that in order to prevent exploitation and clarify this shortcoming, there is a need for a policy and legal framework to protect gig economy workers.
“Noel lost his life supporting his family and the company he considered to be a life partner. I hope that his sacrifice and dedication to work will be given dignity for the last time,” said Hontiveros.
