Over 1,000 Public Jeepneys in Bacolod City Stops Operation

Public Jeepneys w/out Franchise in Bacolod Stopped Operating Starting November 7

PUBLIC JEEPNEYS – More than 1,000 public utility jeepney vehicles in Bacolod City stopped their operations.

Starting Monday, November 7, 2022, a lot of public commuters in Bacolod City were having a hard time getting a jeepney ride. It is because several PUJs stopped operating due to their franchise issues.

Now that the face-to-face classes have resumed in the Philippines, there are a lot of commuters on a daily basis. Some people even had to take at least two (2) jeepney rides going to their destination. The recent changes in the transport operations in Bacolod City affects many people.

Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, more than 1,000 public jeepneys in Bacolod City stopped their operation to avoid getting fined by the Land Transportation Office. More commonly called LTO, the license-giving body is conducting wide checking of the vehicles that are operating on the roads.

Based on the report, the vehicles of the drivers who will be caught driving public jeepneys with an expired franchise or business permit will be impounded. Several schools decided to switch back to online classes amid the struggles on public transportation.

Sentrong Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Negros President Albert Villanueva said that their group decided to temporarily stop their operation to avoid getting caught and fined by the LTO. According to him, they want to talk to Bacolod Mayor Albee Benitez to ask for help stressing that if they will not operate, the commuters are the ones who will struggle in taking a ride and their families won’t have food to eat.

Under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program, those public jeepneys that are over 15 years will not be allowed to operate. Federation of Bacolod City Drivers Associations President Elizabeth Katalbas said that it is now that they need the help of Mayor Benitez who allegedly vowed that they will help them. However, currently, the Bacolod Mayor is in isolation after testing positive for COVID-19.
