A noun is an important part of speech in English. It is pretty much difficult to say something or a sentence without a noun in it. This part of speech has various types and this is how you can recognize them.
TYPES:
- COMMON
This refers to a general name of a person, place, thing, event, etc., and starts with a small letter.
Examples:
- teacher
- hospital
- school
- mobile phone
- shopping mall
- doctor
- fruits
- chocolate
- clothes
- PROPER
This refers to a specific name of a person, place, thing, event, brand, etc. and it begins with a big letter.
Examples:
- Dr. Gerardo Castillo
- Mongol
- Bench
- St. Thomas College of Education
- Philippines
- Mauro V. Jimenez Medical Hospital
- Wilkins Distilled Water
- Samsung
- Toblerone
- SM Department Store
- CONCRETE
This refers to things that you can touch physically.
Examples:
- man
- rice
- head
- car

- ABSTRACT
This refers to things that you cannot touch like ideas, concepts, and thoughts.
Examples:
- strength
- mystery
- danger
- love
- sadness
- courage
- happiness
- COUNTABLE
These are the nouns that you can count which can be singular or plural in form.
Examples:
- ball; balls
- boy; boys
- year; years
- car; cars
- dog; dogs
- UNCOUNTABLE
This is also called the mass noun refers to the nouns that will need measure words. They are always singular in sentences.
Examples:
- money
- electricity
- hair
- sand
- stars
- COLLECTIVE
This refers to the nouns denoting a group of individuals.
Examples:
- a fleet of ships
- a series of events
- a glossary of words/phrases
- a team of players
- a tribe of natives

- a bank of circuits
- COMPOUND
This refers to nouns made of two or more words that may have open or space in between words, hyphenated, or closed in form.

- sunset
- software
- POSSESSIVE
This refers to nouns that show ownership or a direct connection and any noun can become possessive.
Examples:
- Maria’s dog
- the Empire State Building’s door
- my mother’s recipe
- my dad’s work
