Richard Gomez Opposes Mandatory Drug Testing for Artists

Richard Gomez Disagrees with Mandatory Drug Testing for People in Showbiz

Congressman Richard Gomez announced that he opposes mandatory drug testing for artists and people in show business.

Despite having long advocated for the fight against drugs, Richard “Goma” Gomez, representative of the fourth district of Leyte, opposes the idea of making drug testing mandatory for those employed in the entertainment business. Goma defended the possibility of discrimination against artists.

Richard Gomez Drug Testing

“Para sa lahat. Huwag lang gawing i-specific na kailangang mag-drug testing dahil artista. Hindi puwede, kasi masyadong discriminatory yun. Siguro maganda yung drug testing kung merong purpose,” Goma said at the Ormoc City Superdome.

“Like for example, mag-drug testing dahil kailangan sa trabaho, requirement siya. Yun, OK yun. Pero yung i-point out na specific na artista lang ang i-test dahil may mga artistang nagda-drugs, discriminatory yun!” he added.

Goma began his first months in office as mayor of Ormoc City in 2016 by concentrating on the city’s drug issue. Goma noted that in 2016, Ormoc City was truly Region VIII’s drug capital.

“So, sabi ko sa tao, if I win as mayor, I am going to clean up the city. Of which I did. Tamang-tama kaming dalawa ni Presidente [Rodrigo] Duterte, nanalo. I spoke to him, I told him the problem. So, in less than six months, naging drug-free yung Ormoc City. It was a tough job, pero ganun talaga. You had to be strong about it,” he shared.

The drug war waged during the previous Duterte administration was well-known. Goma disregarded the warnings when “cleaning” Ormoc. He said that there were actual drug operations and that many sinister characters perished during the drug era.

“Yun ang trabaho ng pulis. Pag lumaban talaga yung hinuhuli, the police will have to protect themselves. So, after six months, eight out of the Top 10 drug personalities na nasa Ormoc City were gone,” he noted.

Goma is referring to the drug suspects who were apprehended and slain after reportedly resisting arrest. Based on the article of PEP, Goma is the vice chairman of the committee against dangerous drugs now that he is a member of Congress.

The 75th Charter Day celebration in Ormoc, today known as the “City of Beautiful City,” was enjoyable, with this past Thursday, October 20, being its high point. The mayor of Ormoc at the moment is Goma’s wife, Lucy Torres-Gomez.
