Robin Padilla Baffled by K-Dramas Popularity: ‘Mas pogi kami’

Robin Padilla Baffled by the Popularity of K-Dramas to Filipino Citizens

Senator Robin Padilla was baffled by the popularity of Korean Dramas (K-Dramas) in the Philippines and to the Filipino people.

In the 2023 budget hearing of the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP), Senator Robinhood “Robin” Padilla is reported to be perplexed as to why the majority of Filipino viewers enjoy TV series from South Korea, also known as “K-Dramas”. Senators and Tirso Cruz III, the new FDCP Chairman, were present.

He is claimed to be confused because, in his opinion, Filipino artists are more successful than South Korean artists, according to Senator Padilla. He questioned why they chose to watch K-Dramas instead of local artists’ shows.

He also stressed that his nose wouldn’t be damaged even if he pounded it because it didn’t go through “Salamat po, Dok.” He is implying that several Korean artists underwent cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance.

“Kami po ay naguguluhan dahil kapag tumitingin naman kami sa salamin… mas pogi naman kami sa mga tiga-South Korea. Wala naman inayos sa amin, kasi itong ilong ko kahit suntukin nang ilang beses, walang inayos dito,” insisted the senator.

In connection with this matter, Padilla also made a suggestion to raise the tax on foreign television shows that are broadcast in the nation. According to the report, the FDCP Chairman concurred that there should be a balance when it comes to the country’s broadcasting of series or films, whether they are foreign or domestic.

Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, meantime, discussed the possibility of prohibiting the broadcast of Korean dramas and other foreign programs in the Philippines in order to encourage Filipinos to watch indigenous programming. Estrada made it clear that his comments about banning were made simply “out of exasperation.”
