Personal Background

Born on August 27, 1959, Leila Norma Eulalia Josefa Magistrado de Lima is the eldest daughter of former Philippine Commission on Elections (Comelec) commissioner Vicente de Lima and Norma Magistrado. She grew up in Iriga, Camarines Sur in Bicol.

In elementary, Leila graduated as class valedictorian. In college, he enrolled at De La Salle University and took AB History degree which she finished in 1980. She took her Bachelor of Laws degree at San Beda College of Law and graduated salutatorian in 1985. She took the licensure exam for lawyers in the same year and ranked 8th in the passers of the 1985 BAR Exam with an 86.26%.

Law and Political Career

In 1986, Leila de Lima became a staff member of Supreme Court Associate Justice Isagani Cruz. From 2008 to 2010, she served as the chairperson of the Commission on Human Rights under the Arroyo administration. In 2010, she was appointed by then President Noynoy Aquino as the justice secretary.

In 2016, De Lima ran for senator under Koalisyon ng Daang Matuwid of the Liberal Party and placed 12th in the results with over 14 million votes. She is a staunch critic of the drug war and urged the Congress for investigation. In 2022, she ran for re-election while she is detained inside the Philippine National Police (PNP) Custodial Center in Camp Crame for drug charges but she lost the election.

Cases versus Former Sen. De Lima

The former Senator is currently detained in Camp Crame due to her alleged involvement in drug trade inside the National Bilibid when she was the secretary of the Department of Justice (DOJ). The former Senator denied the accusations. Recently, several personalities who pinned her down during the senate hearings over the issue changed their stand with some of them claiming that they were just forced to accuse her.
