Leila De Lima Briefly Taken Hostage At Camp Crame

LEILA DE LIMA – Detained former Senator Leila de Lima was taken hostage briefly on Sunday morning.

Former Senator Leila de Lima had been detained in PNP Custodial Center in Camp Crame since February 24, 2017, for drug-related charges. This Sunday morning, October 9, 2022, the lawyer got involved in a hostage-taking situation after 3 other detainees in Camp Crame attempted to escape.

Fortunately, de Lima was rescued after being implicated in the hostage-taking. Based on a report from Inquirer, Feliciano Sulayao Jr., another at Camp Crame inmate who was held on the charge of being a sub-leader of the local terrorist group Abu Sayyaf, is believed to have carried out the hostage-taking.

According to the police, Feliciano Sulayao attempted to escape the jail facility with Idang Susukan and Arnel Cabintoy before taking Leila De Lima hostage. Cabintoy was an alleged member of the terrorist organization Dawlah Islamiyah, while Susukan was detained for allegedly being a subleader of the Abu Sayyaf.

Around 6:30 a.m. when the persons under police custody were brought breakfast to the maximum compound when Cabintoy, Susukan, and Sulayao suddenly grabbed and stabbed the duty personnel, Police Corporal Roger Agustin, in different parts of the body.

The three then tried to flee but when duty tower guard Patrolman Lorenz Matias saw the commotion, he shot the suspects Cabintoy and Susukan. Then Sulayo went to De Lima’s cell and took her hostage.

PNP Chief Police General Rodolfo Azurin Jr. said. that the incident lasted half an hour. He believes the prisoners just really wanted to escape

“It might have just been a coincidence that Senator de Lima was there, they saw that she was the right cover… because if they really targeted the former senator, they would not have waited for the police officer [to drop by with their food],” Azurin said.

Special Action Forces personnel responded quickly so De Lima was saved from harm. She was immediately brought to a hospital for a checkup. Agustin and the person under custody, Jonathan Carpio, were injured.
