Fifa President Gianni Infantino Breaks Silence on Indonesia Football Tragedy

FIFA President Gianni Infantino broke his silence on the tragedy that took place following a football match in Indonesia.

At least 125 people reportedly died from the fight that rose between the fans of Arema FC and the police authorities after a soccer match at Kanjuruhan stadium. Based on a report on BBC News, there are claims that the cops allegedly tear-gassed the supporters so they rushed to the stadium’s exits which triggered a stampede. According to the report, Fifa which is the governing football body across the globe said that no “crowd control gas” must be used by the authorities during matches. Fifa President Gianni Infantino said that it was “a dark day for all involved in football and a tragedy beyond comprehension”. The authorities defend that the crowd was “anarchic” and destroyed some of their vehicles.

INDONESIA FOOTBALL MATCH – Following the home team losing the football games, a fight between the fans and the police authorities rose.

One of the sports that is very popular towards the Indonesia people is football. Fifa, the international governing body of football, organizes several football games and matches every year in their country.

One of the most popular teams in Indonesia is Arema FC which is a professional club based in Malang, East Java. They earned the nickname “Singo Edan” – meaning The Mad Lions. The team is one of the best football teams in the country.

The revival of the team was recorded in the 1980’s. Prior to the launch of the 2021-2022 Liga 1 season, the club directors chose entrepreneur Gilang Widya Pramana as their president.

Arema Football Club plays in the Kanjuruhan Stadium since 2004. Prior to it, the team was playing at Gajayana Stadium. The current stadium where they play can hold 42,449 people. Their supporters are Aremania and Aremanita.

Recently, Arema Football Club played in Kanjaruhan Stadium, Indonesia. Unfortunately, the match resulted to a fight between their supporters and the police authorities. The unfortunate incident took place after the team lost to their rivals.

Based on a report on BBC, a lot of people died following a stampede triggered by the police authorities allegedly tear-gassing fans who invaded their pitch. A lot of people suffocated as they rushed to the exits of the stadium.

According to East Java Police Chief Nico Afinta, the fans allegedly attacked the police officers and damaged the patrol cars. He described the situation as “anarchic”. Two policemen died from the incident and several other deaths took place.
