DOH Confirm Typhoon Karding Damage Health Care Facilities in Luzon

Typhoon Karding left the PAR but “partially damage’ 21 health care facilities in Philippines the Department of Health said Tuesday.

The Department of Health officer-in-charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said that, roofs of medical facilities were torn off because of the strong wind that the typhoon bring also some facilities were all flooded.

“We have a total of 21 facilities that were partly damaged because of Karding… but there [was] no disruption of services,” Vergeire said during the press meeting.

They also stated that the help from local government are starting to repair the damaged part of health care facilities to continue their service for the community that need their help. Based on the report of ABS-CBN News, Vergeire also stated that lots of Covid-19 vaccines was wasted and cannot be use again.

After flooding the Department of Health ordered to it’s regional directors to provide post-exposure prophylaxis for the people to avoid leptospirosis. They mentioned that all the people that expose their selves in flood must take the shots.

“We have instructed all of them na lahat ng lumusong sa baha ay kailangan mabigyan ng prophylactic na medicine kung saan libre po itong ibinibigay sa mga health centers,” Vergeire said.

Meanwhile, The report also mentioned that, the cases of Leptospirosis in Philippines increase for over 15% and 156 deaths due to same reason, 14 in January; 11 in February; 23 in March; 32 in April; 29 in May; 29 in June; and 50 in July.

Leptospirosis is a bacteria that can enter your body through open wounds or crack skin. Drinking contaminated, dirty and flood water can be the reason you can catch the said infection. Fever, headache, muscle pain, red eyes, rashes and discoloration in skin are the signs and symptoms that you have leptospirosis.
