Born on September 16, 1960, Irene Celestina Romualdez Marcos-Araneta is the third child of the late former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and former First Lady Imelda Marcos. She is the younger sister of Pres. Bongbong Marcos and Senator Imee Marcos. She is known to the public as “the quiet one”. She is the only one among the Marcos siblings who does not hold public office.
Irene Marcos is married to Gregorio Maria Araneta III. One of the controversies that surround her despite her “more private” life are the alleged expensive events. These includes her wedding with Araneta which is said to have cost $10.3 million. She is also accused of having a luxurious birthday party in the presidential yacht BRP Ang Pangulo in September 1985.
Also, among the times that Irene gained media attention was when she was tagged in the Panama Papers leak and for igniting student protests following her campus event attendances.
