Gary Valenciano talked about this diabetes journey
Mr. Pure Energy Gary Valenciano said that as a diabetic person, he feels like he is a chemist.
Looking at Gary while performing, it is not obvious that he has a medical condition that has been with him for many years now. In a recent interview, based on the article in PUSH, the singer started his battle against diabetes when he was 14 years old.
Gary shared that it requires effort in monitoring his blood sugar. He became a “chemist” for his disease years ago as the technology was not that advance yet. “Actually, I felt like a chemist because there is no such thing as finger pricking of blood. It was actually done with a test tube, a tablet, and urine,” he said.
Then, he would gather a few drops into a dropper and drop them in. Through this, he would know how high or low his sugar was and this depends on how the tablet would respond.
Gary Valenciano said that it was like a guessing game. Then, the finger pricking happened and he did it for a long time. As technology advances, the singer is thankful that it is not so difficult anymore.
“All the more, it kind of spurred me on to carry on the advocacy in helping Filipinos living with diabetes,” he said. Through continuous glucose monitoring (CGM), the singer said that he is able to manage his disease more efficiently.
Gary said that he wants Filipinos with diabetes to be aware that it is “possible to remove the mystery behind the condition.” He also said that diabetic people can live a better life and it just needs “proper diabetes management powered by accurate and real-time data.”
Aside from diabetes, Gary Valenciano also went through critical heart surgery back in 2018. Fortunately, he was able to surpass that.
