When he got busy doing TV shows after his stints in politics, Kim Atienza believed that the fitness that he had in the 80s would sustain him after a long period of time but he was wrong. He suffered from a stroke and battled the life-threatening Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS).

It is a health condition in which the body’s immune system attacks the nerves. “It’s a very rare disorder that affects 1 out of 200,000 people. The reason? Nobody knows the reason. It causes total paralysis,” Kuya Kim shared.

He thought that the paralysis he felt in his feet and hands was another form of stroke. The doctor told him that although he can afford the treatment, they wanted him to know that it can be expensive.

After asking how much the treatment is, his doctor answered, “One of these medicines is called IVIG or Immunoglobulin. It will cost… what’s your weight ba? 155? About PHP300,000 to PHP500,000 a day.” This treatment lasted for around 10 days.

The TV host said that people who can’t afford this amount for treatment are in a scary situation because once the diaphragm becomes paralyzed, the person can no longer breathe. After his treatment, Kim Atienza shared that the doctor told him to take a high dosage of Vitamin B Complex for a year in order for his nerves to get back to what it was.
