The majority of jeepney drivers in San Antonio, Zambales will temporarily stop their operations due to the surging fuel prices.
On Tuesday (June 21, 2022), Subic-San Felipe-San Narciso Transport Cooperative official announced that the majority of the public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers will stop operations due to the costly fuel
The group chairman Joelson Del Mundo said that at least 30 of the 42 public utility jeepney (PUJ) drivers will stop plying their routes. Del Mundo made the statement after phase 3 of the service contracting program of LTFRB last June 30.

Zambales PUJ drivers were tapped for the government’s service contracting program. Under the program, the jeepney drivers were being paid P28 per kilometer. The program also aims to give incentives to the drivers based on their trips.
“After Phase 3 of the program, drivers can no longer afford the daily boundary because their daily income will only go to fuel expenses,” Del Mundo said.
The group official explained that the boundary system is the fixed amount paid for driving a passenger vehicle for 12 hours. Some drivers who don’ own a jeepney have to pay for their boundaries and leave them with small take-home pay.

Del Mundo who is a jeepney operator and driver narrated that is only earning P200 to P500 due to consecutive fuel price hikes. He used to earn P1, 500 daily. Local taxi drivers have been also affected by the oil price adjustments.
