COMPARE AND CONTRAST – This is the definition of comparing and contrasting and some techniques in writing comparison essays.
In writing, comparing and contrasting are two essential things. This is a style that can help the readers understand ideas, concepts, items, places, and others by discussing the similarities and differences between two things.
This is how we can classify and determine how two things are similar and alike to each other.
Here are some reasons why this is important:
- for sorting and classifying details and ideas
- to keep the reader’s focus on important details
- indicate the difference between two related objects
- it can help improve the writer’s organizational skills when it comes to putting his ideas and thoughts to words in a structured and organized manner
- provide an explanation for clarifications
- improve the ability to evaluate
Here are some techniques for writing comparison essays:
- Basis of Comparison
It is important to have a basis. For example, in education, it will make sense if you discuss the pros and cons of face-to-face classes and online classes.
- Alternating Method
The writer, in discussing two items, discusses one factor of the first item first then followed by the same topic of discussion for the second item.
- Block Method
This is done when the writer discusses all aspects of the first item in one paragraph and then another paragraph for all aspects of the second item according to a post from Lumen Learning.
- Combination Method
This is where you can do a combination of the methods stated above for a deeper analysis of two things that are related.
